I am a sucker for christmas. I really love everything about it. Well, maybe not everything. People are more stressed out. More grumpy. Have less time. That isn‘t great. But I love the snow. The smell of cinnemon. The light of candles. Tea and Glühwein (I won‘t translate this, figure it out alone) Christmas carols and christmas pop songs. Yes, even „Last christmas“. It just makes me happy.
This time of year is my absolute favorite. Everything tingles with expectation. Christmas is coming. You have to prepare, get ready, buy gifts, hope for peace and harmony with your family. I want to focus on the first things. I have the gifts - or most of them. (Ordered online. Thx, Amazon.) So, now I can prepare myself and get ready.
What better way to get ready, then watching christmas movies?! So, here is my list of “to watch“:
1. It‘s a Wonderful Life - This movie is undeniably the best christmas movie ever. And it will be forever. YOu will laugh. You will cry. And you will realize in the end - yes, life is, indeed, wonderful.
2. A Christmas Carol - in every version available. I love it. I have never read it. But I watch every year. Starting with the 1951 adaptation with Alastair Sim as Scrooge. Then there is the 1984 version with Geiorge C. Scott in the lead role. And of course, my favorite, when in 1999 Patrick Stewart became Scrooge. I love the Disney version, the comedy version with Bill Murray, and every other - sometimes strange - alternative. I watch them all. At least once. And you should, too.
3. Miracle on 34th Street - Watching this movie makes me always wish for two things: First, that Santa was actually real - and that he was Richard Attenborough.
4. We‘re no Angels - the 1955 movie with Humphrey Bogart. This is a wonderful movie. And when you feel alone and hopeless - this move will lift your heart. And make you believe in humanity again.
5. Love, Actually - I love the storytelling. I love the characters. You shouldn‘t think too much about it. Just enjoy the feeling you get - yes, love is, actually, all around you.
6. Die Hard - Come on. You need a little action on christmas. This is so much fun. And it never gets old. Great Alan Rickman as evil Hans Gruber. „Now I have a machine gun, ho, ho, ho.“
7. Rise of the Guardians - who doesn‘t love a mesh up of all your favorite holidays?! This is such a beautiful movie.
8. Dear Santa - Sometimes miracles happen. And sometimes Santa needs a little help. But almost always we are too blind to believe it and just be grateful.
9. 12 Dates of Christmas - Okay, this one‘s just for fun. It isn‘t the best day-repeating movie. But it is funny. And the love story is the starting point, but not the main point of the story. She really gets to understand what christmas is about.
10. A Christmas Wish - Oh, yes. Don‘t we all wish to stand up for ourselves. To be honest and open. But then we don‘t. Mostly out of fear. So movies where honesty and bluntness actually work out for the better give us hope for ourselves. And then we go on lying and being polite to each other.
11. The Family Stone - Sarah Jessica Parker is so unlikeable and so adorable awkward in this movie. And relatable. I really love this movie.
12. A Nightmare Before Christmas - what would christmas be without halloween? Well, you‘re about to find out, when Jack takes over the holidays. I actually watch this movies several times a year. But it has to be watched before christmas.
13. Hogfather - If you have never read a single line, that Terry Pratchett has written, then I pity you. He is - was - one of the greatest fantasy writers. And the world he has created is wonderful. Just like his take on christmas.
14. A Christmas Kiss - It starts and ends with love in an elevator. Sadly, Aerosmith has nothing to do with it. And it is very cringy. But, come on. It‘s christmas. You need a little cringe.
OMG, I could go on for hours. But I have to stop. There are so many great christmas movies. And I love to watch them. Because even the worst of them still give me this. warm and cozy feeling of christmas. So, what are your top picks? What movie should I absolutely watch (if I haven‘t already)? Come on, Interner - tell me.
