Ok, today I want to talk about an „Oldie but Goldie“ - as we say in Germany. And the reason is the latest show of my favorite podcast: Hello Internet.
CGPGrey and Brady Haran answered some questions out of a book, titled ‚Book of thunks“. And so I have decided to answer some of them myself. Today I stumbled over the following one: „Would you rather be a dead celebrity or a living criminal?“
You can read my thoughts here. For everyone who doesn‘t know german: I came to the conclusion, that I as myself and without an altered personality would rather be a dead celebrity. But there is one criminal, I really love - Hudson Hawk. (Okay, there are also Robin Hood and Alan RIckman‘s Sheriff of Nottingham, Hans Gruber, The Jackal, Jimmy Tudeski, Simon Gruber - let‘s just not talk about this, now)
So, I wanted to talk about Hudson Hawk. Because he is the nicest of all the criminals. I mean, except when he took that stuffed elefant from that kid...
1. He is played by Bruce Willis. That makes me extremly biased. And I don‘t care. I love the man in everything he does.
2. He sings during his heists. I don‘t know how often I have watched that scene.
3. He doesn‘t want to rob that stuff, but is forced to. That‘s always a big plus.
4. He is so nice, that even a nun falls for him.
So, I like the kind of good criminals. The intelligent ones. But only in movies. Where I can pretend that there are no real victims. I mean, in the case of Hudson Hawk - no one was really hurt - a museum or the vatican aren‘t people. The bad badies ended badly and the good „badie“ got his happy end. That‘s how it should always be.
But of course, in real life, there is no such thing as a good criminal. I don‘t think of one time offenders, who have a really, really, really good reason as criminals. Criminals are those who do it professionally and therefor often. And then there is no excuse. I mean, I want to believe that there is something like „honor between thieves“ and such. I can‘t help to not romanticize them. It‘s all nice in movies. But so many things are nice in movies - and total bs in real life.
Especially when I think of the other criminals I mentioned above - you don‘t want such people to have a happy end in real life. At least, I don‘t. And yes, I know most of them are murderers, while Hudson Hawk is just a thief. Still, I was really sorry that Hans Gruber died. But I wouldn‘t mind too much IRL.
