First things first: Definitely a big thumbs up. Or better two. - I guess, I need a new system.
I don’t like giving points. It’s always so arbitrary. And requires a lot of thinking and deciding. So, thumbs up or down should be my thing. But it isn’t. You can’t give a thing that’s just meh a thumbs down. Because that’s for bad stuff. And you can’t give „The usual suspects“ the same thumbs up as „Wonder Woman“.
But I think I have found a solution.
I am creating categories and I give points in each category. 1 for bad, 2 for meh, 3 for great (and 4 for excellent). Every time I will look at three categories - story, acting/writing, genre - and so anything can get x out of 9 points.
(And „The usual suspects“ would get 12 out of 9 points)
So let’s look at Santa Clarita Diet
1. Story: When your wife becomes a zombie, you could divorce her - or you help her killing for survival. Here the latter occurs and it is really funny. And sometimes even thoughtful. Definitely 3 points
2. Acting: Drew Barrymore as Zombie-Mom is just great. But of course I am biased. I don’t think that she can ever do anything wrong. Timothy Olyphant is a skilled actor, too. But the highlight are Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo. I immediately have fallen in love with those two. And I am looking forward to see more of them. 3 points
3. Genre: It‘s zombies and it’s comedy. This is the new way to deal with this old threat. She definitely eats people. And it is funny. But with them trying to stay a family and working as real estate agents - there is a lot more going on. And I love it. It’s not super unexpected and often enough you can see where they’re headed. But it is still very entertaining. So, it is better than 2, but I am not super sure if it’s a 3 - objectively. But who ever said that I has to be objective? I am highly biased. Therefore 3 points.
Thats 9 out of 9
