I finally have seen the best DC super movie - or so I have been told. And yeah, it had its ups. It was definitely entertaining. And I liked it a lot. And it surely helped, watching it in 3D. But I think, it could have been better. Or perhaps I could have been better.
It definitely doesn't help, when there's this little voice in your head, right at the beginning, saying: "Narration. Ding." 😜
So, let's start with an up: Gal Gadot is the perfect Wonder Woman. She portrayes her so believable. And enjoyable. She definitely looks the part. And she can fight. It's the most perfect match since Christopher Reeves and Superman - I'm just talking DC. I won't compare this movie with the MCEU. Bite me!
What wasn't too great?
1. Stupid Woman!
We start with narration. The totally useless kind, since Hippolyta didn't stick to Zeus' plan. What did the Queen think?? "Oh, hey, I now have a child, that was crafted to defeat the God of War. But, screw that. What good would it be to prepare her for that fight?! I will just keep her on the island. Nothing will ever happen to her here!" Yeah, sure! We're talking about Amazons! Damn it. These women made babies, but kept only the girls and sent the boys to live with their dads! No way, this woman, this queen wouldn't teach her daughter everything she needed to know!
2. Bridge between Gods and mankind?!
Really? The Amazons are a bridge, and should protect mankind?! How do you do this the best way? Not to interact with mankind in any way. Not to know anything about what's going on in the world. Not keeping eyes out for Ares. These Amazons just don't give a shit. And that's probably why they don't have kids anymore - they stopped living on earth.
3. What kind of books and education do you get on Themyscira?!
Diana knows everything about sex, or what Amazons thought important: you need men for bbies, they're not good at giving you pleasure. She knows that from books. A lot of books. And our little princess knows almost every language there is. So, they have books. And she kind of was prepared for - diplomacy? I mean languages and sex - seems legit.
No, you don't have to learn about culture. Clothes? Nah. Food? Who cares?! Outside of this island it's a world ruled by men - but don't you worry. You will never meet a man in your whole life - how ever long that may be. If Diana wasn't supposed to ever leave the island, why did she learn all these languages? If Amazons weren't mating anymore, why give her books about sex?
4. Who knew what?
Diana wanted to train. Her mom said no. She did it anyway. For quite some time. But never did any power outbreak occur. Fine. But - Hippolyta knew; Antiope knew. When her powers finally break through, everyone stares at her as if she was a wierdo.
Hell, even Ares knew. Why wasn't there at least one girl cheering for the princess?! They are warriors, after all.
5. Zeus (and again that stupid woman)
After the war, Zeus had just died. He himself said, that Ares would be back. That they have to be prepared. And he trusted Hippolyta enough to give her that one thing that could kill his son and save mankind. But she decided right away: "I will keep her save, no matter what."
Then one day, there are men on the island. With guns. Her sister gets killed. And still she thinks: "nah, that doesn't bother me at all. No way, that this could be Ares!"
We don know, if Zeus himself wanted the Godslayer to be part of a team, but seeing how perfectly the amazons work together, the most stupid thing is, to let Diana go alone. With only a man by her side.
6. Ares
Why does it always have to be daddy issues? And hating mankind? I mean, come on, he is the God of War! He likes them to battle. Without them, what has he left?! They are his toys. You don't destroy your toys.
How does he know of Diana? Why isn't he better prepared? Why does he want her to help him? Everything in his plan is wrong. Ok, he wasn't the bright one. He should have asked his sister Athene, instead of our little princess.
What did I like?
1. Every fighting scene with Gal Gadot!
2. Intelligent men
Steve actually steps aside and gives Diana room to fight, when they are attacked in the alley.
If she can read it, let her translate it. Who cares that she's a woman, idiots?!
Steve remembers the amazon shield trick - and is able to recreate it.
3. The sidekicks
Yes, they didn't have much to do - except for making Diana understand and love mankind. And I fell for them, too. So glad, they made it out alive.
4. Girl-Power but not overboarding feminism
I am a woman. And I know that there is a unbalance between men and women. But I don't think you have to turn it the other way round to empower women. And here we have Diana, new to the world and still kicking ass. Especially because she is a bit naive and very innocent, she conquers your heart and the whole movie.
With Doctor Poison we have a female villain that would have been nice to be Ares. Just to show that even Diana has stereotypes in her head. I liked the scene with her and Steve.
Still Diana can fall in love. She can have her romance. Her doubts.
5. I laughed and was genuinely entertained
6. I've said it before: Gal Gadot is perfect! And the reason this movie didn't suck.
So, it's a superhero movie. What did I expect? Pretty much what I got. But it could have been even better.
1. Steve says goodbye
It was perfect. He says, what he has to say. She can't hear him. The watch says everything. But then they had to spell it out. Why?
2. The wrong Ares
Ok, I didn't think, that Ludendorff was Ares. Usually in these movies, when every finger points in one direction, it's someone else. As I said, I even thought of Doctor Poison. Everything would have been better than the obvious choice.
Until Diana killed Ludendorff - and nothing happened. When Diana was genuinely confused that the war didn't end immediately, and Steve tried to explain to her that people aren't perfect. Then I wanted him to be Ares. After the whole Ares and Diana talking and fighting scene, I really wanted Ludendorff to be Ares.
The Ares implication has two problems: First, it makes World War I something that happened to men. And second, how do you explain World War II? All the violence that Diana surely witnesses, when she stays living with humans - how does she deal with that?
I would have liked for Diana to figure out Ares "inspiration" by herself. Then think, that her mother was right. But remember all the people she has met and realize that Steve is right - we deserve saving. And like Ares inspired hate and war, she could inspire hope and peace.
